Surprised

I'm a little bit surprised that the British media hasn't made more of the Knoxville church shooting. After previous rampages, colleagues have asked me about it. This time they hadn't heard. I thought the story hit most of the elements the British media like to cover in American culture - churches and guns. Maybe they just passed it off as "that's what Americans do - shoot each other, at prayer."

It's not that it was completely ignored. The BBC covered it with a headline:

US church killer 'hated liberals'

And I thought, well - I guess he went to the right place, then.

I've been to church myself, attended services there. Everyone was very friendly. The setting was lovely. A nice bunch of people who didn't deserve that. It's hard to imagine someone wanting to bust in on church services there with a gun. But then, I have a hard time imagining why people to do lots of things.

I can't imagine, too, why people would hate liberals so much. It's become like some national sport. Blame the liberals. It's not that I don't think a lot can go wrong when you have gushy leftist policies, but honestly - I think most of the liberals I know really do mean well. They do try to cover up their own outward meanness - which isn't the worst thing you could do. It's not as bad as shooting up a children's play - in a church.

This didn't get ANY play in the Aussie media. Let's forget for the moment that the Aussie media sucks, and I don't want to sound like a bitter expat, but I think some of it is that these shootings are so common in the U.S. I blame the liberals.

Thanks for the link at Harry's Place. I'm an ex-pat Tennessean, too, often joking that I have dual citizenship in the South and New England.

The story I first saw had a headline something like "Unitarian church shooting in the south", and I freaked, because my parents and brother (along with my niece) are regular attendees of the Unitarian church in Lynchburg, Va. It is just sad to see such violence in a church that is supportive and open to all races, religions, etc. Still, is the reason because this guy hated liberals, or was it something else?
