ViL: We're too polite...

From Steve Sailer, http://isteve.com/

"...You can see the problem that then develops when people from the in-your-face end of the gradient immigrate to the feel-your-pain countries. When immigrants bring their Middle Eastern hostility and assertiveness, the natives in the northwest are reluctant to vocally protest right back at them, because, well, it's just not done. They just give them That Look that causes their fellow Northwest Europeans to feel guilty that they've caused their neighbors discomfort. But it doesn't work on the Middle Easterners. They just see the failure of the natives to do anything substantial as proof of their bland white bread inferiority."

This is true. We do That Look that makes queue-jumpers shuffle guiltily to the back of the line, and we're still kinda surprised when it doesn't work on Islamonazis. Or even Poles.

You are so right. When we lived in Europe, we could sense the decreasing lack in civility the further south and east we went. Istanbul was the worst. Though I never made the connection, queue jumping was a visible manifestation of the phenomenon.

You might want to include in your listing of queue jumpers the tiny mama-sans who, though two feet shorter, will flat run over you if you don't physically stand your ground.

I'm sensing racist overtones here. I remember a conversation I once had with a woman in Ohio who was very disturbed by queue jumpers in Florida.

I guess it happens everywhere, doesn't it?

Sailer's point was about cultural variations; in some cultures people are more disinclined to face the unspoken opprobrium of their peers, so that eg a dirty look can send a queue-jumper to the back of the line. His examples were Japan and Britain. I certainly think this is a real cultural variation. In other cultures a queue jumper simply gets pushed to the back of the line. I'm not sure one is necessarily superior to the other.

BTW the Polish immigrant workers play loud music but they're very nice if you actually knock on the door & ask them to turn it down. :)
