I need help. I'm really struggling for a costume idea for this year's Halloween festivities. I hate renting costumes and generally prefer to pull my costume together from random bits of clothing I have plus, stuff from second-hand shops, and I can sew a little bit.
... and for anyone who plans to be in London this year on the 29th of October - here are details for the American expat community's best Halloween party.
The Texas Exes are hosting a Halloweeen Party at a bar called Heads and Tails. You can see pics from last year's Halloween party, so you know what kind of standards I'm trying to achieve.

Random bits of clothing?!??
Wow, it has been a long time since I worked out a Halloween costume. One year, my friend and I put masking tape all around the outline of our bodies and put a strip of police tape around us. We went as chalk outlines.
You could get some gray mechanic's coveralls and some sort of water gun, back pack type of thingie. Then you could be a Ghostbuster. Would that be well recognized in England?
Doesn't matter if it's recognised in England or not - it's 70 to 80% American at this party. But I kind of like that.
Another frugal way out is to wear a green shirt with a penny taped to it and get makeup to black out one of your eyes (or a pirate patch!). Make a necklace with the letter 'P' on it.
Haven't you always wanted to be a black-eyed pea?
Corny, but I bet you'll be the only vegetable there... pun intended.
Just don't be the Corpse Bride, pretty well everybody in the U.S. is going to be her.
