Is that the best you can do?

I'm watching Fox News they're showing a live press conference with Condaleeza Rice talking about Hurricane Katrina. Last I heard she was the FOREIGN Secretary. No disrespect to Dr Rice, but is that the most appropriate person you can find in this administration or just the only competent one?

Fortunately she seemed to be taking matters in hand.

The reason you see her on tv is because she's spent the last 3 days on vacation in NYC, going to see SPAMALOT, and buying designer shoes. This is from GAWKER: Just moments ago at the Ferragamo on 5th Avenue, Condoleeza Rice was seen spending several thousands of dollars on some nice, new shoes (we've confirmed this, so her new heels will surely get coverage from the WaPo's Robin Givhan). A fellow shopper, unable to fathom the absurdity of Rice's timing, went up to the Secretary and reportedly shouted, "How dare you shop for shoes while thousands are dying and homeless!" Never one to have her fashion choices questioned, Rice had security PHYSICALLY REMOVE the woman.

We'll see how true this is in coming days.

Umm, but she's supposed to be the FOREIGN secretary, it's not actually her job to be looking after Hurricane Katrina relief.

Ooops, forgot to mention, just because I think she's more competent or smarter than the rest of the administration doesn't mean I agree with her.

I don't agree with many (most?) of the White House policies that Rice works to implement, but I have to say I have a sneaking suspicion that she is pretty much a member of the reality-based community; perhaps the only one left in the administration. She may be a hard-ass, but she is a smart and more or less competent hard-ass. I can't think of anyone else in the Bush government who could be described that way.

Plus she's an academic. Us academics have to stick together...

BEN-VENISTE: Isn't it a fact, Dr. Rice, that the August 6 PDB warned against possible attacks in this country? And I ask you whether you recall the title of that PDB?

RICE: I believe the title was, "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States."

Now, I'm sure she's awfully smart but I don't automatically equate brainy with competent.

Condi's role in this should have been to vet and accept or decline the offers of assistance from the rest of the world. And since she was off at Ferragamo while Sri Lanka was trying to figure out who to send money to, I think it's encumbent on her to show up and do her job.
