BTW - that was a rhetorical question, but if you want an answer, you can find a kinda disturbing one here. Turns out there's a racist origin, and I now have greater than my already great respect for Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill

Okay, I'll "fess up". I always thought the tag "dismal science" was in reference to Malthusian predictions of starvation. Guess one can learn something every day. BTW, I may return the favor and "rip this off" myself.
