French elections

So, Nicolas Sarkozy, the center-right candidate for President of France, wins. I think for the sake of France, that's probably a good thing. France must change, it isn't working anymore, literally. Nice as it is, though.

My random thoughts:

  • I think it's great that a woman was running as a finalist in the French presidential elections. If I voted in France, I wouldn't have voted for her, but I'm glad she was there.
  • Sarkozy will impose reforms. French unions will strike and strike and strike. I wouldn't plan a trip to France during peak holiday times.
  • Reforms to the labor market, needed as they are, will not make much difference straight away. Instead there will be uncertainty and more young, talented French people will try to get their careers started in London, because there are no jobs in France.
  • Neither Sarkozy nor Royal will be able to solve the problem of Muslim integration into mainstream French culture. Too many have been living in a special, suburban immigrant angry stew for too long.

There are some nifty insights into French culture and this election over here at Anglofille. You should read it. Really.

Anglofille's analysis is interesting. I believe that more 'white professional women' in the USA have children than in France, which apparently is a sign of racism (?!)

I agree with Vol that Sarkorzy won't solve Muslim integration within his term(s) as Presidetnt, but it's not impossible he could take measures that could change the trajectory; (a) reducing Muslim immigration to reduce the growth of the banlieues and (b) at the same time increasing employment opportunities for French Muslims, eventually reducing one of the causes of the inter-racial (actually inter-religious) hatred.
Since there was no chance in Hell that Royal would even have contemplated either than these, Sarkozy's election has got to be a plus for France. - Vol-in-Law

My point was that the policies that encourage and reward professional women (read: white women) for having children are designed to offset the high birthrate of the non-white (read: undesirable) population.

Right-wingers in many developed countries are very upset that white women are not reproducing enough to replace the white population and that the non-white population will soon be the majority. People like Pat Buchanan have written whole books on this ("Death of the West").

If France is so worried about the population, why don't they allow in more immigrants? Because they want more white people. You don't see any racism in that?

If your definition of racism is white people wanting more white people, then it's racist. Personally I think racism is only meaningfully defined as dislike of other races rather than liking one's own race (does this only apply to whites?) and from a non-neo-Marxist perspective I don't see any value in conflating the two. It greatly helps actual racists like the BNP appear respectable when your definition of racist is such that most people meet it.

Of course this may be intentional, the growth of fascist organisations such as the BNP both undermines liberal democracy, and lends truth to the 'racism is everywhere' claim; which fits with the cultural-Marxist goal of eliminating western civilisation.

I hadn't seen white middle-class reproduction as such called racist before, but I guess discouraging white professional women from breeding might further the same goal, if you want to eliminate a civilisation and they're regarded as genetic carriers of that civilisation. C-M dialectic normally focuses on what happens post-partum, but I guess this makes sense as a short-cut.

Who said white middle class breeding was racist?

*sigh*

I never implied any such thing. I was talking about the French government practically bribing women to have children. This, coupled with the racism and xenophobia that exists in mainland Europe, is just a tad creepy to me. I don't think the motives behind these policies are about women's empowerment. Far from it. So I wish they'd stop acting like they are. Governments don't care about women - they care about their own interests.

p.s. Even though I'm a Ph.D student, theory gives me a headache. ACK!
